Fifty years ago yesterday, a bomb consisting of 19 pieces of dynamite exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. It had been placed by four white men of the Ku Klux Klan underneath this African American church during the Civil Rights era when racism was far too common in the South. Four young girls were killed and a few others severely wounded.
One of the survivors of this tragedy has written a first-hand account of her experience and what the civil rights era was like for an African American woman. In her book, there are also a number of quotes from important people like Martin Luther King, Jr. and helpful summaries of what life was like back then. I highly recommend picking up this title (for free no less) to learn more about the civil rights era from a Christian lady who experienced it.
Her book entitled While the World Watched: A Birmingham Bombing Survivor Comes of Age during the Civil Rights Movement (Tyndale, 2011) is available FREE today only in three digital formats.
